How to Stay Motivated to Go to Gym

I have been getting a lot of questions about how I get motivated to work out. Well the answer is simple really, I got tired of envying people’s bodies, yet I knew I had the same capabilities of having an even better body than theirs, don’t get me wrong, I have a few Instagram idols that motivate me.

I will share with you below a few tricks that motivate me to wake up every morning before I start working, and walk to them gym. I am lucky that gym is just few minutes walk from my place. I prefer walking because it’s the only time I get to think in peace, and plan my day. It’s also a mini work out on its own. Ok here goes..

Mental Check- Have a mental picture or a picture on your phone of what you want your body to look like. You have to be precise so you know what type of exercises to do to achieve the body you desire. Take before and after pictures, I have pictures of what I used to look like before I started gym, and what I look like now, trust me the changes are immense and this motivates me to push harder each day. If you have an idol that has a body type like yours, perfect, visualize you having their body.

Motivation- You have to be patient yet persistent and consistent, remember Rome was not build in one day  nothing motivates me like sore muscles the following day, being unable to get out of bed, this encourages me more as I know my work out was effective, and also the more you see changes on your body, the more you are motivated to keep at it.

Encouragement- Go to a gym that offers a lot of activities, choose activities that you love, for me I do zumba, shape, weight training and yoga. I get excited every morning because I do different work outs, I hate routine as it is boring, this makes gym seem like a chore, instead of a fun adventure. I get to socialize with like minded people, with the same goals as mine which makes it even better.

Gym buddy- having a gym buddy is a great motivator, because he/she makes you feel obliged to attend, and can push you to go to gym even on days that you don’t feel like going. Make sure you get a gym buddy that is reliable and as dedicated as you. I have a gym buddy that loves weight training, which I don’t like but have to do as I’m trying to build muscle, she really pushes me on days that I decide to hit the machines.

Diet- I have a sweet tooth and it’s my down fall, I try an eat clean and healthy 6 times a week and drink plenty of water daily, so I can have a cheat day where I can sneak in a bar or two of chocolate or a slice of cake or that glass of wine that I love very much haha. My sweet tooth pushes me to work out very hard, so I can award myself at the end of the week. ( every ones preferences are different)

  1. I totally agree with you Hun, gym should be a lifestyle and the more you do it the more it becomes a part of you, what keeps me motivated is pictures of myself before the baby and of course Instagram lol too many hot bodies out there, one needs to keep up! 😅

  2. Very important tips doll. I also think it is super important to chose a kind of workout that you enjoy most and get excited to do! I for example HATE running so spinning and functional fitness like the grid are perfect for me and get my heart rate up! I think also very important is: throw away your scale! Exercise will barely ever make you lose kilograms, you might actually even gain weight but you will get leaner and tighter as your muscle mass grows and your body fat shrinks! I think circumference and body fat percentage are far better indicators ! And then of course…a clean diet makes about 70% of a toned and lean body! It is true, abs are made in the kitchen!

    1. Hi Becca you are right, I agree with you, making gym fun is the best way, otherwise if its boring you won’t enjoy it.

  3. You are so fit! I’d like to find a gym buddy. I used to go with a friend of mine, but he is a guy so I wasn’t really interested in what he was doing! Currently, I’m going 2 or 3 times a week and has become a hassle, I think I should get new gym clothes, that usually motivates me 😉

    1. Hi Cynthia. That’s a great idea gym clothing also motivates me, I hope you find a new gym buddy, but its good as you are going to gum already 2-3 times a week. Well done.

  4. Well, I’m guessing that I’m the old lady in the crowd but here’s my perspective for what it’s worth.

I will never go to the gym, don’t like public places, but consistency and motivation for exercise is imperative at every age. And if you don’t like gyms, then it’s entirely possible to figure out a routine that you can stick with at home. Pushups, weights, even a home gym set up if you like, plus yoga and of course, healthy eating. All possible even if you hate public spaces!

By the way, you look absolutely terrific Mapolo. Very obvious that you’ve mastered the ‘motivation’ problem!

    1. Hi Deborah thank you so much. Gym is not for everyone, I used to hate it, but I realized I can’t work out at home on my own, my gym is fun so I’m always excited to go. As long as you do exercise its all that matters:)

  5. So true! Love the advice about choosing how you want your body to look and doing excercises to get you there! You look lovely by the way! Xxx

  6. On point! Everyone is looking for that magic potion or pill to simply transform. Nope, it doesn’t exist! It’s consistency, dedication and discipline is what will result in success. Great post!

  7. Very good, motivating and informative. How advice would you give to someone who would like to stay fit but doesn’t like the gym?

    1. Hi Hloni, thank you, you can download some work out apps on your phone, then you can exercise at home you will get great results:) let MW know how it goes.

  8. Great post. It really does just become a habit in the end doesn’t it? I’ve been having bad stomach issues and had to undertake a lifestyle change, what seemed like a drag a few weeks ago, I look forward to now. Good habits are just as hard to shake as bad habits once you’ve instilled them into your life!

    1. Hi David, sorry to hear about your stomach issues, but I’m glad you at it again, its all about priorities really, once you start, you realize you can’t live without it:)

  9. Love the post, as a matter of fact, 2 days ago I started a live exercise video on Facebook which is going to go for the next 4 weeks. As a health coach, my struggle was finding time to exercise even when I love doing it so much. So now I have no excuse to shed the rest of the baby weight in front of the camera. Thank you for inspiring us all! Gorgeous pictures too.

    1. Hi Mira I’m glad I did inspire you, that’s the whole point, to encourage and motivate people to take care of their bodies:) I will love to watch your life video.

  10. Great motivational tips along with fabulous photos. You look amazing, good to hear of your sweet tooth, I have the same and yes it does motivate you to work-out even harder. So agree with you about mixing it up with workouts to stop it getting boring. Variety is the key!
