A few days ago I had the privilege of having a photo shoot with one of my favorite, and talented South African female fashion designer Thabo Makhetha. I am always excited to work with female entrepreneurs as I am pro women empowerment 🙂
Thabo’s designs encapsulate my heritage as a proud Mosotho girl. I felt honored and proud wearing her designs as they represent my country’s traditional blanket known as Seana Marena kobo).
She took an ordinary blanket and transformed it into a beautiful masterpiece that could be worn as a dress, cape, pants or jacket. The creativity, quality and uniqueness of her designs make you fall in love with them almost immediately, forgetting that they are derived from a simple blanket 🙂
Wearing her clothes made me reminisce about family road trips we took in the Maloti mountains in Lesotho, seeing young boys with a herd of cattle proudly and happily wearing their Seana Marena blankets. The true beauty of my culture lies in this blankets.
I love how versatile her designs are, some of the capes can be worn inside out, to give 2 different looks, that can be styled depending on whether you want to dress up, or down. The peach dress which was one of my favorite designs, can be worn as an evening dress that you can wear with heels, or dressed down with sandals or pumps.
The store is situated at the prestigious 15 On Orange hotel, in Cape Town. It also show cases other artist’s and designs like Afrigarde who designed the beautiful red necklace I wore during the shoot.
